So you’re thinking of booking newborn photos. Between the sleepless nights and endless feedings, it might feel like the wildest time to schedule pictures but trust me, these early weeks go by fast! Newborn baby photos aren’t about looking perfect but they’re about freezing the little details you’ll want to remember later. The tiny toes, soft cheeks, and that way your baby curls right into your chest!
As an Orange County newborn photographer, I promise you—your session does not need to be stressful. It’s not about matching outfits or Pinterest-perfect aesthetics. The best photos happen when everyone feels comfortable and the baby feels cozy. Here’s what I tell every new parent before stepping in front of my camera.
Comfort First, Always
You’ll spend most of the session cuddling your baby. That means your clothing should feel good to move in, sit in, and snuggle in. If you’re tugging at a stiff dress or overheating in a heavy sweater, it shows. Babies can sense your discomfort too.
One of my favorite examples: A mom once showed up in a beautiful but structured dress. It looked stunning but every time she held her baby, the fabric rubbed against their skin and the little one fussed nonstop. After a few attempts, she changed into the linen set she had worn to the studio. The difference was instant. Baby calmed down. Mom relaxed. And the photos turned out so gorgeous.
That’s when I started telling parents: think pajamas, not a runway show. Linen sets, soft knits, and flowy dresses are perfect. Keep it breathable, cozy, and something you can actually snuggle in.
Keep It Simple
Trust me on this one when I say logos and loud patterns are not your friend during a newborn session. Sure, that tiny dinosaur onesie or bold floral dress might be adorable in real life, but on camera they can be distracting and take the spotlight off your baby. And the whole point is to see them! Their little fingers, soft cheeks, and the sweet way they snuggle into you.
This goes for everyone in the photo: mom, dad, siblings, even socks. Neutral tones and solid fabrics always look better and let the connection shine. If we’re shooting at home, think about the background too. A simple swaddle or neutral blanket will always photograph better than one covered in logos or cartoon characters.
Pack the Diaper Bag Like You Mean It
Here’s some tough love: blowouts happen. Babies get hungry. And newborn sessions are almost always paused for feeding, diaper changes, or soothing. That’s normal. So it's important to be prepared to breastfeed or provide bottles to feed the baby. It’s a whole lot smoother when you’ve packed the right things.
Start with these essentials and pack extra:
- Extra diapers and wipes
- Burp cloths
- An extra swaddle or two
- Bottles or formula if you’re not breastfeeding
- A pacifier, even if your baby doesn’t normally take one (it can be a lifesaver during posing)
And if you’re bringing older siblings? Snacks. Quiet ones. Nothing messy. Trust me on this one.
The goal is simple: a fed, comfortable baby = a calm, successful session!
Where We’ll Be Shooting
Most of my newborn sessions happen either at your home or at Spark Studios in Huntington Beach, which is a cozy space with gorgeous light (and plenty of room for all your gear). Whether you’re at home or in the studio, the same rules apply: keep clothing simple and pack more than you think you’ll need.
When you’re searching for an Orange County newborn photographer, look for someone who not only takes beautiful photos but also helps you feel prepared and comfortable. That extra support makes a huge difference during those first weeks with your baby.

Don’t Overthink It, Just Enjoy It!
I get it. You’re juggling life with a newborn and the idea of being camera-ready feels overwhelming. But remember, this isn’t about perfectly styled outfits or magazine-worthy props. It's all about documenting the start of your family’s story!
The truth is that babies run the show. Sometimes they sleep through the entire session. Sometimes they need constant cuddles. Either way, you’ll end up with photos that feel real and true to your family. Your job is to show up in something you can actually breathe in. Pack the diaper bag with the essentials. And let me handle the rest.
